Treatment of childhood anxiety disorder (CAD) is challenging due to the growing burden of chronic, persistent anxiety disorders and comorbid depression. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of quetiapine (Seroquel®) in treating child anxiety in children with ADHD. Quetiapine was chosen because of its efficacy for acute ADHD symptoms and its unique pharmacokinetic properties. Seroquel, a potent antipsychotic, has been widely used to treat ADHD. However, its efficacy in children with ADHD is not well established. This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of quetiapine in treating children with ADHD.
MethodsA total of 149 children with ADHD were recruited. The treatment period was a one-week period. Inclusion criteria included age between 18 and 60 years and with at least a mild to moderate history of childhood anxiety disorder (CAD) and at least one diagnosis of depression. Exclusion criteria included diagnosis of substance abuse disorder, psychiatric disease, chronic alcohol use disorder, or any other chronic disease. This study was performed at the level of school-based clinical trial (NCT01349961).
ResultsChildren were recruited to the study between January 2009 and December 2011, and included in this analysis were 1.3% of children with ADHD and 1.4% of children with depression. Children with ADHD were significantly more likely to suffer from mild ADHD symptoms and to have a low level of severity or functioning in childhood anxiety disorders. Quetiapine was found to be more effective in treating ADHD than the other medications.
ConclusionQuetiapine was a safe and effective treatment for children with ADHD, with fewer side effects than other antipsychotic medications. The safety of quetiapine was well-established, with no reported adverse events. Quetiapine has a unique pharmacokinetic profile compared to other antipsychotics. In clinical trials, quetiapine has been found to be efficacious in treating childhood anxiety disorder. The safety profile of quetiapine is comparable with that of other antipsychotics.
